Newspapers

All extant Eastern Shore newspapers are available on microfilm in the Heritage Center.  Of these, only some are available online and in many cases only a partial run is available to view. 

For those editions not available online, Heritage Center staff will provide digital images of a reasonable number of articles or obituaries if an exact date or limited date range is provided.  For details, please see our FAQ page.

  • Eastern Virginian (Onancock), 15 September 1876
  • National Recorder (Drummondtown), 2 November 1860
  • Northampton Times (Cape Charles), 1930-1964
  • Peninsula Enterprise (Accomac), 1881-1964 

Microfilm is available to view in the Heritage Center.  Digital downloads and prints can be made with our equipment. Please call ahead to make a reservation to use the microfilm reader.

We do not interlibrary loan microfilm to other libraries.  If you require interlibrary loan of newspaper microfilm to use at another location, please contact the Library of Virginia.

We do, however, allow patrons to request and view microfilm from Library of Virginia at the Heritage Center. Microfilm requested through interlibrary loan must be viewed at the Heritage Center. Please refer to our Interlibrary Loan Policy

Available Online:

The Library of Virginia maintains the Virginia Chronicle, a online historical archive of Virginia newspapers, providing free access to full text searching and digitized images. Additional features can be access with a Library of Virginia library card account.
