Byrd, James E. – Date of Death; 29 Feb 1912 – Aged; 72 – Died at his home, No. 1724 Bolton St., Baltimore, Md. – A member of Harmanson West Camp, United Confederate Veterans – Mr. Byrd was a comrade of the writer of this subject. We crossed the bay early in 1861 and joined Company K. Virginia Infantry, Gen. Rhodes’ Brigade; D. H. Hills Division, Longstreet’s Corps. We passed through man terrible dangers side by side in the battle of Seven Pines. He carried the flag of the 4th Infantry in that tearful charge upon the Federal batteries, he was the first man to mount on top of the works and stuck his flagstaff down in the ground and waived his hat over his head calling to his comrades to press in we have them. In 1863 Mr. Byrd was transferred to Company C. 24th Virginia Cavalry where he served until the end. He was a near kindred of the writer, and our long service together amid dangers and hunger and cold, weary and worn out with continued marching, fighting and starving many giving up and lay down to die. These suffering and privations bound us very closely together with cords and can be broken only by death. The death of Comrade Byrd makes me feel very sad to think I shall see his kind face no more, until the great Commander shall call us together in the reunion in the beautiful beyond.
